Email Marketing
Why do you need Email Marketing?
The purpose of email marketing is to stay in touch with the people you want to help – your customers, and your future customers.
By staying in touch with them you’re able to provide value (helpful information, products and services that will benefit them), special offers (sales, discounts), etc. By staying in touch with them you’re able to build a relationship.
This is the big reason WHY you need email marketing!
If you’re not building a relationship with your prospects and customers – then they’re not going to come to you when they need your products and services—they’ll go to the other guy who DID build a relationship with them.
They know that other guy, they’ve come to like him, trust him, and want to business with him – not you, because he stayed in touch with them; providing useful, helpful, and interesting information – and you didn’t. They know him. They don’t know you.
Don’t like that scenario? Then get them to know you, like you, trust you, and want to do business with you instead of your competition. Get to know them better (and them you) by launching an email marketing campaign.
And when that one’s launched, launch another.
What is Email Marketing?
Email marketing is a form of direct marketing. Direct marketing is a method of getting your message to your customers – directly; from you straight to them. It’s usually followed up with some sort of call to action; they see your message and they’re able to respond somehow – by clicking a link, calling a number, or hitting reply if it’s an email message. Because of this call to action component, direct marketing is sometimes referred to as direct-response marketing. Email is just one form of direct-response marketing. Other forms include direct mail (like postcards) and SMS (a Short Message Service that sends text messages to your customer’s cell phone).
How to do Email Marketing?
Build an email campaign for (at the very least) …
- Your new prospects, for each of your products.
- For your existing customers, for each of your products.
- For your best customers, for each of your products.
Here’s how…
Create a simple webpage or draft a simple email that outlines the benefits you’ll be sharing and ask them to (if they’re interested) sign up (aka opt-in) for your email newsletter. You don’t have to call it a newsletter… you can just say, “Sign up and I’ll send you a free report that solves [fill in the blank » their biggest problem].” And just let them know that you’ll also send them other messages with useful information.
If they’re interested and opt-in then you now have one new email subscriber; a new person on your email list.
Keep promoting that list via the web, blogs, email, word of mouth… and over time you’ll have large list of people who asked to hear from you, hearing from you all the time. And when it’s time to buy something – they’ll buy, because they came to like you and trust you.
Repeat for your existing customers: this will create repeat customers.
Now with all these lists, make sure you stay in touch… keep sending them emails over time. Once a month – at least, once a week is better, a few times a week or even daily.
This method of emailing them consistently is called drip marketing… steadily providing value (dripping content) to them, great content like…
- A free report
- Helpful tips, techniques, ideas
- An interesting customer story; a story they’ll be able to relate to
- A discount, a new product offer, or a special promotion
Don’t worry, they won’t mind hearing from you. Because they asked for the information and if you’re truly providing value – they’ll look forward to your emails. If not, let them unsubscribe with no hard feelings.
By implementing email marketing into your business, you’re creating a large list of people who look forward to getting your emails… and who will, consequently, buy from you (when they need or want your stuff) instead of buying from your competition…
A list of subscribers that you build a relationship with via email is an extremely lucrative asset; one that many businesses completely overlook.
How to get started?
Creating an email campaign isn’t as difficult as it might seem. There are simple techniques to determine what to place in the email, as well as when and how often to send them.
Different campaigns will be tailored slightly differently…
- For new prospects: send them a free report that outlines your product, its benefits, how to use it, send them customer testimonials, ways to help them (how-to information), things they’ll find useful. Just keep providing good content and every once and a while ask them to buy something. If you’re providing value, and building trust because of the great stuff you’re giving them for free in your emails – they’ll buy from you when the time is right for the them. In the meantime, keep giving, keep emailing.
- For existing customers: send them a thank you for being a customer, give them bigger discounts (special customer-only offers), send them a birthday note, send them useful information and how-to information just like you do for new prospects. And ask them to refer a friend; a customer, especially a repeat customer, is usually very happy to tell someone about you.
Now there’s more to email marketing than what I’ve outlined on this page, like for example, what tool to use to send the emails. There are some amazing tools (called email autoresponders) that make the whole process simple: setting up different lists, drafting the emails, scheduling their delivery – automatically – and even tracking your various email’s effectiveness (did the email get opened?, did the subscriber click the links inside?)
